How to choose a leather tote bag for your laptop?
It accompanies you from the office to dinner, carrying your laptop, files, pencil case, and whatever else you slip in at the last minute. The work tote is arguably the bag we use most. It is also the one we choose the fastest, based on a photo, without checking if it will really hold up throughout the day.
Here are the six criteria we look at, as leather goods experts, before designing a laptop bag. They apply to any brand.
1. Size: look at centimeters, not inches
The number of inches measures the screen diagonal, not the size of the computer. Two "14-inch" machines can differ by more than a centimeter. Instead, compare your computer's dimensions to the inside dimensions of the bag.
|
Computer |
Approximate dimensions |
|---|---|
|
MacBook Air 13" |
30.4 × 21.5 cm |
|
MacBook Pro 14" |
31.3 × 22.1 cm |
|
MacBook Air 15" |
34 × 23.8 cm |
|
MacBook Pro 16" |
35.6 × 24.8 cm |
For a flared tote, measure the base, not the opening: that is where the computer rests. The base must be at least as wide as the computer; otherwise, it will be a tight fit and distort the leather. Also consider the depth: a very flat tote might hold the laptop, but not the charger, water bottle, and notebook.
2. Weight: the criterion we forget
This is the point product sheets highlight the least, and yet you will feel it within the first week. Add the weight of the empty bag, the computer (1.2 to 1.6 kg for a 13 or 14-inch model), and about a kilogram of daily essentials.
You have to choose between two approaches:
- A lightweight bag (canvas, nylon, thin unlined leather): pleasant if you walk a lot, but it sags, offers little protection for the computer, and wears out faster.
- A structured bag in thick leather: it stands up on its own, protects its contents, and lasts for years, but it is heavier. That is the price of the material.
Ask yourself a simple question: how long do you carry your bag each day? For a few trips between home, the subway, and the office, a structured bag is perfectly fine. For an hour of walking or entire days on the move, prefer a lighter model or a backpack.
3. Structure: a bag that stands up
A good laptop tote maintains its shape, even when empty. Look at the base (reinforced or not), the thickness of the leather, and how the sides hold up. A bag that stands up can be placed on the ground without collapsing, stores easily under a desk, and ages better because the leather does not crease in the same spots day after day.
4. Protecting the computer
Thick leather already absorbs light impacts. Then check for:
- The lining: a soft lining (microsuede, cotton) prevents scratches on the computer.
- Storage: a separate pocket or pouch prevents keys from rubbing against the screen.
- Closure: an open tote is more practical for everyday use, while a zippered one is more reassuring when using public transport. It is up to you to see what matters most.
5. Leather: full-grain, pebbled, or smooth
On a bag carried every day, the quality of the leather determines how it will look in five years.
- Full-grain: the top layer of the hide, the most resistant. It develops a patina over time instead of deteriorating. Prefer this over "genuine leather" or split leather, which are less durable.
- Pebbled: its texture hides small scratches and scuffs. It is the most worry-free choice for a work bag.
- Smooth: dressier, but shows marks more easily. It requires a bit more care.
Also look at the origin of the leather. LWG (Leather Working Group) certification indicates that a tannery is audited on its water, energy, and chemical management.
6. Carrying and longevity
Measure the handle drop, the distance between the top of the handle and the top of the bag:
- Less than 15 cm: the bag is carried by hand or in the crook of the arm.
- 15 cm and over: it goes over the shoulder, even over a coat.
Finally, a work tote lives an intense life: handles, corners, and the base wear out first. Ask yourself who will repair it. A brand that offers repair services allows you to keep it for years instead of replacing it.
Checklist before buying
- The base of the bag is at least as wide as my computer
- The total weight (bag + computer + belongings) is suitable for my commutes
- The bag stands up on its own, with a reinforced base
- The lining and storage protect the screen
- The leather is full-grain, ideally pebbled
- The handles match my carrying preference (hand, arm, or shoulder)
- The brand offers maintenance or repairs
And OZI, in all this?
We designed OZI with these criteria in mind, and we prefer to tell you frankly who it is for.
What it does very well. Its 32 cm base accommodates a 14-inch computer, like a 14" MacBook Pro (31.3 cm), and the tote flares up to 51 cm at the top for everything else you need for the day. It is not suitable for 15 and 16-inch models. It is crafted from pebbled full-grain leather, from an LWG-certified Spanish tannery, and fashioned in a small workshop in Petrer. Its microsuede lining protects the screen, and its removable leather pouch keeps small items separate. Its pleats, inspired by the jiaozi dumplings shaped by hand, give it a structure that does not sag. Repair is free for the first year, then available at cost price.
Its weak point, which we acknowledge: its weight. OZI weighs about 1.3 kg empty, because it uses a lot of leather. That is what gives it its structure and longevity, but with a computer, count on 3 kg total. Its 18 cm handles can be carried by hand, in the crook of the arm, or over the shoulder.
It is made for you if you alternate between short commutes, the office, and meetings, and want a bag that looks just as good in a meeting as it does at dinner. It is less so if you walk for an hour a day with your bag: in that case, a lighter model will serve you better.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which tote should I choose for a 14-inch computer? A tote with a base at least as wide as the computer, i.e., about 32 cm for a 14-inch model. The OZI tote by MEILYNE, with its 32 cm base, accommodates a 14-inch; it is not suitable for 15 and 16-inch models.
Isn't a leather tote too heavy for everyday use? A thick leather tote weighs more than a canvas bag: about 1.3 kg for OZI, for example. It is very suitable for short commutes. For long daily walks, prefer a lighter bag.
Is a laptop sleeve necessary inside a leather tote? It is not essential if the bag is lined and has a separate pocket. A thin sleeve remains useful when using public transport.
How do I maintain a pebbled leather tote? Dust it with a dry cloth, nourish the leather with a suitable cream every 3 to 4 months, and store it standing up in its dust bag. All the details are in our care guide.
